Fire emergency procedures
Smoke
If you see or smell smoke, call Campus Safety immediately at 416-978-2222.
Fire
If you discover a fire:
- Leave the area and close the doors
 - Pull the manual station to activate fire alarm
 - Exit the building but do not use elevators
 - Call 911
 
Only use a fire extinguisher if you have been trained and can do so safely.
Fire alarm
If you hear the fire alarm:
- Never ignore or assume the alarm is false or a test
 - Turn off all equipment before evacuating, if applicable
 - Exit the building using the nearest and safest exit or stairway
 - Never use elevators
 - Close (but not lock) all doors behind you
 - Move away from the building and do not obstruct fire department access
 - Do not re-enter the building until advised
- In the event of a fire, the Fire Department has the authority over the emergency scene and would advise occupants if and when a re-entry is safe
 
 - Take valuables with you (e.g., purses, jackets, keys)
 
Managers and faculty:
- Are responsible for safely evacuating students and staff using the nearest and safest exit
 - Must remind students and staff of the evacuation procedures
 - Must ensure all equipment is turned off prior to evacuating the building (e.g., Bunsen burners, machines, kitchen stoves)
 
Individuals requiring assistance to evacuate:
- Call Campus Safety at 416-978-2222
 - Provide the dispatcher your location and a callback number
 - Always stay where you are unless it is unsafe, the Fire Department will assist you in evacuating
 - Call Campus Safety back if there is any change in your situation
